The capacitor and resistor are in parallel. The black and white thing you are referring to is a diode. The banded end is the positive side of the diode, and in the circuit, the diode on the left allows current to flow from the turn signal bulb to the relay and capacitor, but not from the capacitor back to the turn signal bulb. Without the diode, the capacitor would discharge through the turn signal bulb defeating the point of the circuit.
The diode across terminals 85 and 86 (the relay coil) is there to prevent the energy stored in the coil from charging the capacitor when the current is removed.
