No leaking! Burning a quart in 150 miles you will have a clear view in your rear view mirror of a cloud or smog following you. Sounds like a ring job and it would be better to just drop in a new/used motor cause it sounded like these guys working on her car needed to make a boat payment. With the check valve being backwards, surprised the motor light isn't on. Them removing and installing the oil pan could have dislodge the metal oil transfer pipe. The pipe transfers dirty oil to the filter and if it's loose from the oil pan job they did or worse yet them purposely pulling it the car would be essentially running with no oil filter. The dirty oil would fall directly into the oil pan then get sucked up and reused. The oil trap container hose on the back of the motor would be my next guess. That hose can get squishy and rip but that would show massive signs of leaking.
