I just got done with a ring job and upper-engine clean up on our '02 Aero at 150k miles. It was burning 1qt/300miles or so but did not smoke or leak and has a new-ish PCV kit. The engine had a lot of varnish though, enough to cause compression rings to stick but over all the engine was in decent shape. The POs ran dino oil for some time, it would seem.
I think the biggest source of the oil consumption was worn valve stem seals. They were hard as a rock and as I was removing valves from the head they'd drop right out so the seal lips were obviously worn.
There was a lot of carbon on the piston crowns, valves and top of the cylinders so it'd been burning oil for some time.
There really isn't a lot of mystery to oil consumption. External leaks, turbo seals are easy to check. If they are good then you're looking inside the head and block for stem seals and rings. Bad rings should show up as reduced compression and performance.
"Dude...": the cross pipe in the block under the crank carries clean oil from the filter and cooler to main oilway in the block. The pickup tube in the pan carries dirty oil to the pump. If either one were leaking badly you'd see low oil pressure at idle, for sure. Enough to maybe trip the pressure switch.
