The old adage "smoke 'em if you got 'em" applies for premium, many drivers. When I have premium in there, I just don't drive the same way. Consequently I get much poorer fuel consumption numbers. And even cruising, the premium is consumed faster (or it is a wash) or at least it is in the 4 Saab 9-5s we currently have.
I'm accustomed to a mild cost increase for 93 over 89. At $ 2.00 a gallon, the premium for premium should be 20-25 cents per gallon. Maybe yes in California, but in most parts of the USA the current premium is 50-60 cents per gallon. You'd have to experience a huge fuel mileage increase to offset that. I'm falling into a pattern where I buy from stores that are choosy about their supply source AND I tend to buy premium only when the price differential is reasonable. I drive a lot of miles and really don't need to have the turbo spooled up all the time anyway.
