Happy to run up to 12,000, 13,000 miles on a single crankcase of the good stuff (I change the filter at midpoint at top off). I ain't changing the oil in Utah in the middle of a vacation.
I do a full 12 months and more, if the mileage is only 2-3 thousand miles, in the middling climate of the mountains of North Carolina.
20,000 is probably showing off (my engineer Dad has done this for years) but I think 5,000 or less between changes, if the oil has only been in there 4-6 months, unless you drive like the Devil, that's just waste.
Given how astonishing the changes in performance of motor oil in the last 40 years, we should've changed oil and filter back then every 800 to 1,500 miles and almost nobody ever did that. That was when 5,000 miles between oil changes was a crazy long interval - the thing is, some of us did it and even got away with it. I remember alternating between summer weight and winter weight motor oil just like installing the snow tires and removing them in Spring. Olde Tyme motor oil was that bad, and the new stuff is that good.
