You can use a Dorman fuel line union #800-191 for 5/16 - 8mm nylon line connections. A-zone, Advance Auto, etc., carry them. I have tried the method you suggest, but when I heated the nylon tubing, also from Dorman, to put on the end of the check valve, it got gooey, and when I finally got it insert, it was not a good seal. Obviously the OEM tubing is more forgiving. I needed a quick fix, so I used rubber instead. The Dorman union worked great, no leaks, and it's a quick release, too. I may give it a try again if my check valve needs replacing again, or I want a more elegant solution. You will need to rent a special tool to press the tubing into the check valve end.
