I think sometimes a person like me can just say what I do and I don't have to worry about a whole passel of people following like lemmings and no longer changing their filters and oil and in some cases don't even watch the dipstick at all.

Folks in authority probably should choose a cautionary approach. Ideally I would like the Manufacturer and the Techs and the Gov't all adopt a fairly short change interval and then the careful consumer extends it but only in accordance with the type of monitoring he's doing and the kinds of miles he puts on a car. I'm checking the crankcase levels every day or every other day, and putting 1,000 miles on the car the way another driver puts on 150 miles. When I say I can get away with 12,000-13,000 miles, the reader sees others recommending shorter intervals and knows my use may not be that typical. So they don't blindly glom onto what I am doing.

The problem IMO with a 20,000 mile interval is, once the interval is processed through to the end consumer, he's doing 30,000 without changes, and quits changing the filter, and quits monitoring the dipstick and couldn't tell you which, if any of his vehicles are consuming oil.

So, the issue becomes, do we recommend an interval like 5,000 miles because it is "right" for people who log miles very slowly; who subject their cars to significant abuse (towing, clouds of heavy dust, driving on fire roads) and do we make the recommendation knowing a lot of people will pretend to listen then change at 10,000 anyway? My frustration is, some people are painfully protective of their motor oil and others do a snap overreaction to that and never mess with the oil at all. What is the best way to extend the interval without people beginning to just forget about their car and its care, entirely?
