Coolant leak help-looks like it is along firewall?

I recently had my 9-5 to the garage to have the subframe bushings replaced and I asked the tech to check for the source of an intermittent coolant leak…the diagnosis was the radiator…
So after spending a long Sunday afternoon replacing the radiator the leak was still there…..grrrrr. (thoughts of the garage wanting to make some extra $s comes to mind but because I’ve dealt with them before, I’ll attribute it an ‘honest mistake’.
Since the front end was still on jackstands I went underneath and tried to locate the source of the leak. It is behind the engine block, around the firewall area, between the center-line of the engine and the drivers side wheel. I could not spot the source, but clearly is was not the radiator or any of the ‘up front’ plumbing.
Usually, the leak doesn't happen all the time. I can drive the car 3-5 days and no leaks. Then one day I'll park it in the driveway, and next morning I'll see a coolant stain on the ground.
It was getting dark and after dealing with the radiator, I didn’t have the heart to start tearing up more of the engine compartment.
So I am asking for suggestions of what the source could be and where to look?
I *think* the coolant/heater bypass valve may be the issue (original one with 125K miles), but I just don’t want to go out and buy parts without diagnosing this first. If it is the bypass valve, ways to fix it? I see the bypass hose assembly from Eeuroparts is NLA, so alternatives?
Thanks
J
