My sense, especially when you describe the car sitting for a while is to first rule out the battery by having a proper load test performed.
The voltage drop test is a very good idea given the age of the car and the known issue of corrosion developing in the cable. If the cable is not able to carry enough power to both sustain the load of the crank and power the electronics required to fire the fuel delivery and ignition system, you can experience the issues you describe.
I would look at these two things first as they are easy to check.
When I replaced my positive cable a few years ago after similar symptoms and a voltage drop test, the car functioned as new. I just returned from a 10 day trip, while the car sat in my driveway. It started immediately when I went to work yesterday morning. I was pleased!
Good luck
