When many have replaced with Saab made springs that sag in a month or two, this is not aging or wearing out. It is not 'fit for purpose'. The springs have unsuitable geometric design, alloy or heat treatment. Probably a combination of those factors. The problem might have been from working through GM Europe's supply chain. The springs are simply not strong enough. So the steel needs to be stronger or more of it with more that 5-6 turns. The springs were designed for least cost and it was a failure.
People discuss heavy loads. Weight in the trunk behind the real axle actually reduces loads on the front springs. Passenger loads are mostly evenly distributed. I think that weight transfer during heavy braking is a big factor. Worn shocks increase spring dynamic loads by reducing the share of the axle dynamic loads transferred through the shocks to the body. But when new Saab springs and new shocks/struts are installed and springs sag rapidly, there is nothing to blame except the springs.
If ride height was ever achieved at the factory, the springs may have failed before reaching our shores.
