To a first approximation, F=kx where x is the length of the spring (from nominal), F is the force applied (load), and k is the spring *constant*.
As you stretch or compress the spring it takes more F, but k is the same.
That's a first approximation, but it's pretty good, and the idea is that changing the length of the spring does not really change k very much... however, changing the length of the spring does change the ride height quite a bit, which causes the car to eat tires.
Adding a spacer, the height added is not simply the height of the spacer. The spring compresses a bit more also.
Probably a lot of this could be calculated fairly exactly, and we could probably measure k (and loaded/unloaded length) for new and old springs etc, but it's a bit more than I would bother with. Suffice it to say, the new oem springs will sag over the course of several months, so they are really not worth replacing unless there is lots of corrosion or whatnot. BTDT, still needed to use spacers!
