John,
Thank you for your post at TSN!
The GT1549 GARRETT turbochargers are well known as being problematic due to their compact size but a typical service life of a new genuine SAAB replacement would be 75-100K miles if lubricated and balanced.
The last 5 years has also flooded the market with substandard aftermarket SAAB GT1549 turbocharger replacements. In many cases, these turbochargers are offered as complete assemblies with cast iron exhaust manifold. In almost every case, these exhaust manifolds are much lower in nickel content as original SAAB exhaust manifolds and are subject to cracking at the exhaust discharge portal. If these cracks exist, they often cause premature problems with cartridge/CHRA installation as the rotating turbine could make contact with the exhaust manifold cracks when temperatures rise under normal engine operation.
Insure that your exhaust manifold is original SAAB and has the raised GARRETT logo cast directly into this assembly. Also, be certain that you have a genuine SAAB cartridge as aftermarket will typically cause similar symptoms mentioned relative to your shortened service life.
Best of luck with your repair and we will look forward to hearing how this 3.0 engine repair proceeds!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SDI
