You could do that, and it would be way smaller and have way less flow than the open T-stat. But here's another thought: If the main issue is no coolant to the WP impeller/shaft/seal, what about a good dose of coolant to pre-wet the internals of the pump and seal BEFORE installation, so that it is not dry on start up?
Maybe Bernie, Swedecar, or other techs with more experience of the V6 engines can comment on your issues w failing water pump seals.

P.S. Is it possible that your coolant tank cap is old and not releasing pressure any more ? Sorry if someone already asked this and I missed it in your earlier thread on the WP failures.
