thanks all.. (I'm the original poster.. just had my id reset)...
the other night I cleaned up some of the old grease (which was thicker..brake caliper type grease) .. and pretty much soaked the top portion of the plastic ball with some white lithium grease.. and then I kept working it in for a few minutes.. and then repeated the following day..
Much better, almost as good as new..
Mine is the original mechanism, with 243,000 miles on it, and I think it's still going strong.. though I am intrigued by the short shifter, and what's involved with the install...
