Use a "true" 40 weight for best bearing protection. The 9-5 uses a derivation of the original Saab 99 engine, with the bottom end designed for 30 weight oil and 160 - 180 degree oil temperature. But the oil cooler thermostat on the 9-5 doesn't open until 220 or so, in an effort to boil off the contaminants that lead to sludge in the oil. Note that the original European specification for 9-5 oil is ACEA A3/B3, which most often requires a 40 weight.
Mobil 1 0W-40 was the OE oil for the 9-3SS: a completely different engine. The recommendation for 0W-40 in the 9-5 wasn't made until 2006, I think, and that was for the convenience of the dealers so they wouldn't need two separate oils. But then the USA recommendation before was a 5W-30 synthetic blend which never met the ACEA A3/B3 European spec. Mobil 1 is a great oil, but it's high temperature high shear (i.e., in the bearings) viscosity just one part in 35 away from being a 0W-30. OMO a little too thin for the 9-5.
