Patient is an '01 Aero 180k mi. I's been well cared for it's entire life ... some would say "babied" ... some would use the term "obsessive". Who am I to argue? I bought the car in '06 with ~50k mi on it. It was well cared for by the PO but recall that in those days Saab recommended a synthetic blend. It has received only full synthetic oil since I've owned it.
When I took ownership I pulled the valve cover as a poor man's sludge check. It was quite clean (but of course the head does not tell the whole story). The past few oil changes I've noticed particles in the old oil, not a lot but some.
I just completed a pan-drop of my '00 Aero, and that was so much fun I figured it was time for the '01.
Here is the head back in '06
And here is what I found in the pan this weekend, 12 years later:
It looks bad in the picture because I smeared the particles around with my finger, but there is only about 1/2 teaspoon of "coffee grounds" in the entire pan. Nothing alarming at all (I'd say). The pickup screen had a minimal amount of particles lodged in the screen:
All in all Im encouraged by these findings.
However all of the o-rings in the vicinity (oil pickup, engine oil tube, etc) were hard and flattened. Most broke when I removed them. The big o-ring on the oil pump cover was quite brittle and it snapped in pieces when I removed it. This is the same as i found on '00 a few weeks ago.
I will plan to drop the pan on my '99 soon. Not because I am concerned about sludge but purely to replace these o-rings and seals.
I get the sense that sludge is not much of a concern these days. Perhaps any car that was not cared for and became sludged has already died a miserable death. Full synthetic oil seems to be a good deterrent.
