Maintaining two 2006's so I have seen / feel your pain. I think your main risks here are 1) oil leakage and 2) sludge issues - depending upon on a lot of other factors which might be rather uncontrolled.
I would not delete the system myself if I planned on a long-term reliable vehicle. The boxes are available for not too much $$. The main problem is the amount of take-apart the 2005-2009 cars need to get the larger redesigned PCV box out and get the new one in.
Search for "Replacing the Oil Separator in an 06-09 9-5" to find a couple of people sharing their experiences doing this on both Left hand drive and Right hand drive 9-5's (US and UK). Sounds like the US poster managed with only disconnecting the alternator leads, not removing the intake, exhaust, or alternator - and pulling the trap out the top as you might remove the alternator.
Hope this is helpful.
