Head warped? Posted by Bill B [Email] (#1884) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill B) on Tue, 29 May 2018 19:50:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2001 9-5 base 4, bought at 135k needing a head gasket. Had a shop mill and do valves, no valve replaced. Now has 172k and I did a bad thing 10 days ago. I stopped foo far into an intersection at a light, backed up. Light turned green. Realized I was in R and threw it into a forward gear, probably 2 or 3, didn't look. Got on the highway and realized something was wrong, moved the lever to D. Too late, car stalled, coasted to next exit and rolled into a motel parking lot. Temp gauge was high. Overflow tank was full, lots of hissing from engine. Battery would not crank engine. Had it towed home.
Next day when all was cool and quiet, the coolant was at the seam in the overflow tank, low, but not enough to trigger the light. There was no sign of coolant in the oil, sign being mayonnaise on the dipstick.
I did not try to start it.
Suspecting a warped head again, I did a compression test. 170-138-150-175. Plugs 1,3,4 were a lovely tan. Plug 2 was a bit darker but neither carbon black nor oily. I had to recharge the battery between each cylinder test. All plugs were out, of course, and I cranked counting eight compressions for each cyl test.
Not great. Had the dumb idea to retorque head. Did it. Compression 75-125-147-125. Sounds like a warped head, but I'm open to suggestions.
There was no clicking from the bottom end while I was doing the compression tests. If I need to pull the head (likely), I will pull the engine and do the bottom. If I do the bottom, maybe I'll splurge on forged pistons.
Looking for suggestions. Thanks for reading.
