If you need Turbo to Exhaust gasket, do the Exhaust too . . . Just posting this to say there was an end to the story, and while not speedy, it was satisfactory. Car is running well, making less noise, the CEL for Evap is not on, and the person behind can clearly see when my daughter is on the brakes.
As noted at beginning, I undertook a 4-part job on my daughter's 2006 sport combi (wagon). Three things went well, and one went very loooong. The CHMSL was rebuilt with a new sealed COB LED. I installed a new EVAP solenoid/check valve/hose assembly - easy job w. expensive part. I replaced the front crank seal w. a Corteco seal AND installed a new Oil Pump plate O-ring.
Item #3 on my initial list: on the Turbo to exhaust manifold gasket, I was trying to take a shortcut - and it took longer =(. I ended up identifying a broken manifold stud, drilling it out, and installing new exhaust manifold gasket and all Short stainless steel studs. I should have just gone for the complete manifold & turbo gaskets job from the get go. Trimming out the gasket would have been foolish - I must have been sleep walking! The best route was NOT to remove the turbo, but instead remove the exhaust manifold and do both gaskets. I wasted a lot of time taking turbo out and putting it back in. See the link to another thread in which I asked advice on choices in replacing the exhaust studs.
