I would start with what Bob is getting at --
When my A/C was not behaving last summer -- not blowing cold -- the ACC on AUTO cranked the fan speed way up and opened the recirc, so things were quite noisy. If your A/C isn't working, and you aren't planning on fixing it, try closing the recirc and turning the fan speed down.
If you are wondering what to do with the A/C, an easy and relatively inexpensive way to start is to first run a self-diagnosis as described many places on this board, and see if you have any codes pop-up around the various airbox mechanisms governing airflow. Search the board for any codes that come up.
Also, pop the hood, take a look at the compressor and see if it the center is turning. If so, follow the A/C lines along the fender to where they enter the fire wall -- I have found that a good place to feel them for chill or condensation.
That much should take you all of about 15 minutes to do.
Finally, taking the car to a reputable shop and having the A/C serviced (drain, apply vacuum, refill with the correct weight of R134A) will tell you a lot for a relatively small charge.
-- comparing weight removed to put back will let you know how low the system was.
-- holding vacuum will help identify if there are any major leaks
-- refilling, including a UV Dye, will locate any leaks that may need to be fixed.
-- often, just doing this service, even if there is a pinhole leak somewhere will get you satisfactory cooling
Good luck.
