Creaking and Groaning - the struts, and other thoughts Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Tue, 24 Jul 2018 06:40:15 In Reply to: Creaking and Groaning, Doug W [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 23 Jul 2018 21:43:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Creaks and groans are really hard to address, because they can come from so many things that were all once "right" and aren't really failing, but make noise. There's a difference between functional (driving okay) and really solid, the way you'd like.
If you want it right for a long time, I would replace everything but the springs when you do the struts: Mounts, bearings, bearing dust cover (only things I reused last time), strut accordion dust cover & bump stops (unless you use Bilsteins - then they won't fit), nut/washer, and the rubber and zinc spring seats (spring against strut). WIS indicates that the zinc spacers are designed as sacrificial anodes to prevent galvanic corrosion elsewhere.
This COULD be all that is needed to get rid of a lot of noise - especially if it's groan on turning and strut creak on bumps. Check that the SKF strut mount bearings have enough grease, and add some if they don't seem fully packed.
Other thoughts: 1) Re-check the cleanliness of the fit for each subframe bushing and bolt, then be sure to torque exactly to spec. If you have corrosion on threads or debris at these, they may create noise. Include the smaller bolts for the under-exhaust brace in this quest. You can do this one-at-a-time to avoid redoing alignment. 2) I did not see the sway bar bushings mentioned in your post - I suspect that you were trying to write simply and avoid extra stuff, but those can be terrible noise makers if they no longer squeeze the sway bar or are not greased. 3) Then there are details like the air filter box, splash guards, radiator/intercooler/condenser mounts, etc.
Sorry my response got so long - maybe the struts and fittings will take care of most of it. I hope you get it all to your liking ! Please share your results.

P.S. Yes, a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry would not need you and probably cause extreme boredom. My wife drives an Odyssey van, so I have more time to work on my daughters' SAAB's ! =)
