Took shifter mechanism out, now ignition key won’t turn

I’ve been having a no-start issue for the last few months where it’ll sometimes take numerous tries to get the the starter to engage when the key is turned. After researching I believed the problem was the ignition switch, the piece buried under the shifter. So I took everything out, took the bottom of the ignition switch off and cleaned it a bit. I put everything back together and now the key won’t turn. Can’t seem to get it out when pushing in the little latch in the ignition cylinder either. I’m really hoping to not have to take the shifter mechanism out again so what can I try from the top? The car is a 2005 9-5 Aero if that helps. Thanks for any help.
