For what it's worth, I've done this job a few times, once I spliced in good rubber fuel line with really good clamps, it didn't leak during the time I had it (car ended up in the junkyard after being hit). It's a little bit hillbilly although I think it was safe. I'm sure any leak would stink up the car quickly.
The last time I used the brake flare tool trick, borrow a brake flare tool from the autoparts place and use that to hold the line while you force it on the valve. I also did not want to use a heat gun but put boiling water in an insulated container and submerged the end of the fuel like in that, it did soften it up, the downside is that when things are wet they are harder to grip. I've also used a hair dryer and that worked but I don't think I'm going to try that again for safety reasons.
