When the engine is running at normal RPM the alternator is providing all the electrical power at nearly 14 volts to run all the electrical systems. The battery is either getting recharged or just resting, because it only provides around 12 volts. That's why you can jump start a car with a dead battery and drive away.

If the car died because the voltage was low, that means that the alternator wasn't providing enough power or the wiring wasn't able to carry the power where it was needed (that includes bad connections and poor grounds). With a bad alternator the car will run until the battery voltage drops too low.

If the engine wouldn't crank after the engine quit, that means the battery was dead (or the battery connections were bad) and it didn't get recharged after it was used to start the car. That could mean either a bad battery or a bad charging system. The fact that you could continue driving after jump starting the car suggests that the alternator was providing at least some power.

However, there are other reasons why the car might die on the highway, including a bad crank position sensor, throttle body, fuel pump, etc. That means you could have more than one problem, a bad battery, and some other component that's bad, like the fuel pump.
