Testing my wife's car (2005 Saab 9-5 Arc 285,000km) prior to its e-test (they are being cancelled in Ontario from April 2019 on) and a communication error on both my readers came up multiple times. Searched the internet and found a reference that it could be a pin on the car side male plug. Using a T25 torx, I removed both retention screws and sure enough, one wire had been partially pushed out the back. Using insulated needle nose pliers, I pushed the pin back in and reinstalled the plug. Test worked. Words of wisdom - always plug your ODBII reader handsomely (or prettily) into the car to help avoid this issue.
