I had a 99 V6, purchase, off lease with 57k miles. Right out of the box, the dealer had to replace fuel tank as it would not pass emissions (cracked filler neck, no charge). Within the next 10k miles, I had to replace water pump (failed), timing belt (routine maintenance issue at same time), idler pulleys, power steering pump, and anti lock brake controller. The car was smooth running, but I've never encountered as many odd failures in a car with so few miles.
I have an 05 Aero wagon, 140k, no major issues. Perhaps comparing apples and oranges, not sure. The Aero is a dream to drive. Quick, comfortable and good gas mileage (25-30) at 65-75 mph.
Of course, one is newer, but I was always disappointed with the type of parts that failed on the 99 SE. I should add they were all easy to replace (with the exception of the timing belt due to dual overhead cam).
