Hi NCCaniac -
I'm late to this thread, but Boris is correct that a bad bulb is most likely issue (but possible ballast). On the leveling thing, check your level Linkage before worrying about the sensor & motor. The linkages are easily popped off their pivots when working on the car, but they can be popped back on . . . don't ask how I know.
Changing bulbs does not require dropping the bumper. Remove the battery for the left side (driver side in US / Canada). Remove the tray too. On the right ('passenger') side, remove the rubber intake boot from MAF to the cobra pipe, then remove the MAF and you will (with contortions) be able to replace the bulb. Use care not to wreck the delicate metal fingers that grip and ground the lamp. Those were pretty beat up on my daughter's car by a previous owner, but I straightened them, and they've been good since.
