5 Speed Shifter is Very Stiff Through Neutral

I own a 2006 9-5 "Sport" with the 5-speed. A couple of years ago, I installed a stainless exhaust (about $300 at the time on Amazon). I believe the years it was supposed to fit were 1998 thru 2003. I took a chance and put it on the car (myself). I did notice that the front connection flange came up about 1" short in length. I had to use threaded rod to bring both flanges together and then substitute the normal bolts in, one-at-a-time. So things were under tension, if you will. I noticed that the shifter somehow was stiffer than normal. This Fall, I had a shop extend the front of the system to match a brand-new flex pipe. And he re-did a hanger or 2 on the rear muffler. No more tension.
But to my surprise, the shifter (ball) is very stiff still in the middle "H" area. Very hard to ram it to the right to find 5th. The ball seems like it has a lot of grease on it (visibly) with the boot lifted.
Any recommendations on how to address this? Is the ball gizmo hard to take apart? I did a 9-3 shifter a couple of years back, because the weird spring down there had come undone. I do not see this familiar spring on the 9-5 shifter.
