'02 Aero wagon/'04 v70XC. Both are good cars. The Aero is much more enjoyable to drive. Funny, it's just slightly larger than the Volvo (I have a very narrow garage and the Volvo is slightly easier to park, even with its flanks), but it doesn't feel that way. The Volvo is a load-it-and-go kind of car. The Aero requires driver involvement, you're careful on rutted roads, it's just a little bit more fussy (in a good way) overall, you pay attention more (maybe b/c it's a manual?). But it is easier to drive ultimately.
The Aero's A/C rocks; the Volvo never seems to get that cold without keeping the fan on high. Back seat room is tight in the Volvo. Plastics are different -- both have good/bad qualities there. Plus the Aero simply stands out; lots of soccer moms in the XCs in the DC area.
