I have seen a few common failures and a few rare ones. They commonly leak at the front diff. pinion seal. The thread below this one is one you should check. That clunk would be expensive if it's out of warranty.
The rear lisence pockets all crack and ooze adhesive goo. There is an idler pulley that whines, but that gives you a warning before it fails.
I think maintanence is actually less expensive on the 9-7x than the 9-5.
