I've used 1 lb of citric acid (food grade powder form) on my Mercedes. It seemed work. I've never had a coolant related problem (over 500,000 mi).
For the Saab, I just use the Prestone flush stuff. I've done this every few years since 1987. However, I have had to replace the waterpump (developed a leak) and the headgasket (dumped coolant into the oil). If it wasn't 20 years too late, I would use the citric acid method with the Saab.
