I know some have asked about this in the past and never got answers... and after scouring the internet and finding nothing about these, I figured out the EQ/Spectrum analyzer pinout myself.
Video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dijK1MnLIQ
Copy of the description- "I figured out the pin-out of the proprietary 12 pin cable that runs from the factory tape player to the equalizer. I spliced the left channel to the left rear speaker, no need for both sides as I'm only trying to get a visual. Using the rear speakers also allows to get decent activity without going to absurd volume levels. (i.e. I found using the amp pre-out to be undesirable. The same goes with front speakers as I tend to fade more power to the back, maybe that's just me. )
This is an 88 Turbo, the pin-out might be applicable to other years, I don't know. It goes as follows:
pin # 2 (brown) ... ground |
pin # 3 (blue) ... illumination |
pin #4 (black) .... ground |
pin #5 (orange) ... constant 12v |
pin#7 (gray) ... right output (not needed) |
pin #8 (green) ... left output (not needed) |
pin #9 (white) ... mute (not needed) |
pin #10 (yellow) ... switched 12v |
pin #11 (white brown) ... right input |
pin #12 (white red) ... left input |
Signal ground is the copper shielding around the 4 smaller wires in the bundle... red wire is unused.
The colors are assuming you're using the pigtail removed from the original tape deck, otherwise, the pins on the DIN connector are labeled, iirc. "
I'm not some electrical wizard, after taking the unit apart, I found that Clarion was kind enough to actually label the PCB. I just thought I'd make this info readily available :)
Anyhow, it seems like the bars fall back down slowly/leisurely compared to spectrum analyzers I've seen elsewhere. Does anyone know if these always behaved this way? Also, I think I recall reading somewhere that '87 and earlier units had multiple color bars... can anyone confirm that? I'd like to get my hands on one, if so ^_^
