James,
you may need to refer to user manual for MFD (minimal focusing distance) specs for your lens (or camera if it goes with non-interchangeable built-in lens). It's a common misunderstanding of thinking "oh, I need it moar close-up so I should it move CLOSER!!!1" - and WAF!!! it comes out completely blurred instead. Sometimes it's worth just stepping away and twist it to telephoto zoom position.
Zig
N.B.: quite often MFD for a given zoom lens varies with 'zoom' position: e.g. it may be 10 inches at wide-angle position and 15 inches at telephoto.
