Sometimes when it takes a few cranks to turn over, its because the check valve at the fuel pump is worn out. Under normal conditions, when you shut the car off, the fuel in the fuel lines is not allowed to go backwards into the tank because of a one-way valve called a check valve. When they go bad, they allow the fuel to drain back into the tank. So when you go to crank the engine, the fuel has to be pumped through the lines again. That will take like 5 cranks or so approximately. I know this is an issue on Saab 9000s, but I dont know if it also occurs on Saab 900s. The idle issue is different. Personally I wouldnt worry about it, its an old car, just be happy that it runs. It doesnt have all the fancy computer stuff that newer cars have. You could probably do a tune-up on the idle components and get it back to normal though, if you want to.
