1989 na 5spd-CAR RUNS LIKE IT JUMPED TIME
Posted by t (more from t) on Thu, 8 Mar 2012 14:23:05

Car was running great for months. NOW CAR RUNS LIKE IT JUMPED TIME AND THE PLUG WIRES ARE OUT OF FIRING ORDER. Once last week- out of the blue- big misfire on start up/take off. Thought of water in fuel, cracked dist cap, amm. Pulled back into parking space- weaned it back to running somewhat smooth by feathering the throttle, and drove it home 30 miles in a snowstorm. Noticed “intermittent minor” misfiring under load when driving since, but continued to start and idle quite good w/ very little hunting. Yesterday, added some fuel injection cleaner and later on, the misfiring started becoming more pronounced, and finally the car barely ran-chugging/ coughing, although once it was nursed into 5th gear and cruising 55mph it seem to run a little better than at 20mph barely running through town. Classic amm symptoms I thought and went to the junk yard and swapped in an amm. The car ran great the 10 miles home- solved I thought. Today, upon “normal” start up and take off noticed a slight hesitation, but drove pretty well for 20 mi. Shut car off at home, went to run another errand ½ hr later, and it was back to chugging/ coughing- barely running. Went back to junk yard, and tried four other amm’s- car did not run any better on any of them This afternoon I swapped out: ECU, coil, NTC, knock sensor, IAC, plugs, wires, cap/rotor. There are no known vac leaks, and I cleaned the grounds at the radiator and near the fuel rail. I also cracked the nut on the fuel pressure reg when “running”, and there seemed to be enough fuel pressure there. Also unplugged one injector at a time, but the idle was so bad I did not notice a discernable change in idle when unplugged. The alternator is nearly new, and I have 14V at the battery. Took the car out for one last test ride and forget limp mode, I was in scratch and claw mode to get home w/ absolutely NO POWER UNDER LOAD, AND BARELY IDLING. Also, noticed the exhaust smelled different/unusually hot due presumably to fuel that was not getting burned in the engine. Note the car now runs quite ROUGH hot or cold.
I am going to check the harmonic balancer tomorrow. Hall sensor wires appear ok from what I can see from top of car. Thought about checking the continuity between the ECU and AMM. Any other ideas? Thanks.
