Well, he's right that if the pinion has play, it changes the angle at which the ring and pinion interface, and it probably also loosens the backlash adjustment, which also would cause undue wear. I wouldn't say that just because it was whining its trashed.

That said, if you want the strongest box, you have to start with the best parts.
