I recently upgraded from Vista to 7 on an older laptop. It is no big deal. I don't find 7 is vastly better in speed and usability but it is better, and significantly so in terms of stability. I have an XP machine that runs much faster than the laptop even though it is a less powerful computer overall. Software bloat sells hardware. Old hardware works fine if you don't need to change the software. Internet use unfortunately demands fairly regular software updates.
