Like the Rover 3500, the 900 5 door models - the Turbo and GLE - were slow sellers in the US. I remember a 5 door turbo which had lingered on a dealer lot for almost 2 years back in 1982. Tastes were different back then. Saab under the leadership of Bob Sinclair wanted to move up market from the 99 and luxury buyers wanted trunks. The 4 door was developed primarily with the US market in mind and the 5 door was history in North America after MY 80. Today of course Audi, Porsche and Aston Martin have 5 door luxury sedans available...oh, the irony.
