I've had similar issues with a 1991 900s 2.1 na. Used to be very unnerving when it happens, kind of makes your pulse race as you wonder if it's going to quit for good, how far is the next exit, how long will you have wait for a tow, etc. Then it continues on like nothing ever happened. I eventually replaced the crank sensor and it hasn't happened lately. So, like with any other intermittent issue, who really knows. Sometimes the CEL would come on, but the code was always air fuel related, which makes sense because it didn't fire for a cycle or two, the mixture was off.

Also, the hall sensor for a 2.1 liter isn't in the distributor, but on the crank. Good time to replace the pulley as well.
