Steering wheel play

I have a considerable amount of free-play / wiggle in my steering wheel. I opened up the lower plastic cover to see if there are any bearings that need attention but no.

Is this normal ? the steering wheel can move up/down or left/right almost 1/2 inches (around 1cm).

Is there a way to fix this ?

The car is a 1993 900 Convertible
