not sure about EGR...possible distributor problem?

After unplugging and replugging the dist. connector and AMM connector, the car ran decent. While it was running, I poked in the area of the distributor and it began to run badly and then stalled. Now the car will occasionally start, but run very bad with gray smoke coming out the tail pipe. The receiver for the connector on the distributer is very loose. Could the distributor need a rebuilding?
I still don't see any signs of vacuum leaks.

Throttle body was cleaned not too long ago.
