Favorite fixes:
1. Timing tensioner replacement (early 16v cars). The very first 16v cars had timing chain tensioners that were badly designed. They tended to loosen up and allow a lot of rattle at idle. A new-style tensioner fixes all the disconcerting noise.
2. Automatic transmission governor cleaning. Will restore a T37 automatic tranny that's having cold shifting problems (briefly) to shift like new. Takes the patience of a saint and the faith of a martyr, but sure makes you feel smug afterward.
3. '89-90 N/A ECU replacement. Sputtering? Stuttering? Upshift light flashing? I bet it's the ECU. Swap that sucker out for the one on your shelf!

Favorite upgrades:
1. Raising the rear end. Most non-SPG c900s by this time have developed significant rake, and stick their noses up in the air. Fixing this with a set of progressive-rate springs (available through Swedish Dynamics and Rock Auto) and some urethane spring spacers provided me with the stance and clearance of a rally car in the rear, to match my high front end. Great for snow and gravel. Best of all, I feel totally comfortable asking my fat friends to sit in the back seat now. They won't be embarrassed by a bottoming car!
2. Oil undercoating. Whatever you use, make sure it's at least a little bit eco friendly. I've used roofing tar (don't hate, it's no more flammable than what the early 900s and 99s came with from factory; ask me how I know), fish-based oil, and this new penetrating stuff on my 9000 seems to be holding up great. When I replaced my heat shield, I painted the area above it with hi-temp moly grease. I wonder how used fry oil would work. Too acidic? It sure prevents rust on my Sabatier carbon steel kitchen knives!
3. Extra gauges. I feel that oil pressure and volts are the most necessary ones. For turbo owners, add in boost and a knock LED. On my N/A, I had an extra gauge hole in my three-gauge plate, so I put in a cheapo air-fuel ratio gauge, which allowed me to track down vacuum leaks. It is more sensitive than a voltmeter for the oxygen sensor output. Keep your finger on the pulse of your engine.
