When I saw this posting I was reminded that my hatch struts were in need of replacement. Having both a standard turbo spoiler and louvres was a load even heavy duty Stabilus (OEM) struts were challenged by, even when new. Five years down the line, the hatch had to be lifted up by hand and would only support itself in temperatures over 70 degrees. I too kept a stick handy for colder days.
So when I saw this post I figured $20 was cheap price worth taking a chance.
When new struts arrived the temperatures were unusually warm, in the 70's. After installing the new struts. The first thing I noticed was how much pressure was required to close the hatch. Normally falling swiftly with a clunk, it now had to be firmly pressed into place. Upon opening, the hatch rose easily for the first six inches, then sprung to full height of its own accord. I was impressed. But the true test would have to wait for colder weather.
It snowed last night, bringing temps down into the upper 20's. Again the hatch comes a few inches off the bumper and then lifts by itself. No hesitation, no delay.
Time will tell, but at this point I would have to say these are the strongest lifts I've found. Maybe too much for a hatch without spoiler or other additions, but certain to relieve the fear of inadvertent head injury.
Standard disclaimer applies, I have no financial interest, only wishing to second and elaborate on the OP's recommendation.
