My 1989 has the later Rotor-type fuel pump. Unlike the earlier Roller-type pump, it doesn't have an auxiliary electric feeder pump. What it does have, though, is some little thing called an ejection pump, which I believe is powered by the pressure of the return line fuel. I don't know if they never wear out, or even how they work, but I've never seen replacing them even discussed.
If the replacement job that was done 5 years ago was screwed up, I doubt it would have run perfectly up until last Saturday. I mean, you never know, but doesn't that seem unlikely?
By the way, I replaced the hall-effect sensor two or three years ago, so I don't think it's that. And the engine's still running fine since I topped up the tank. It only took 6 gallons at the top-up, so it already had 10.
I'm thinking I'm going to need to pull the pump assembly and inspect it, as well as the broken fuel level sender and fish out any loose parts. No easy task with an absolutely full tank.
