Heater core/vale leak

I have a 1994 convertible and it developed what I assumed was a leak from the heater control valve. I was getting the usual coolant on the drivers side floorboard. So I removed the heater core and valve as one unit. I have done this before years ago on a different car and I thought I remembered seeing obvious signs that indicated that it had been leaking from the valve.
The unit I just removed looked totally clean. I wanted to identify the source of the leak so I cut a bicycle inter tube and used hose clamps to attach one cut end to either side of the heater valve piping. I then inflated the inter tube and it seemed to hold air.
I thought that if it held air that it should hold antifreeze. Well maybe it needed to be hot. I filled a large garbage can with hot tap water, I am guessing around 120f, and submerged the unit. Still no signs of leaking.
Any ideas as to what may be going on. Is it just not hot enough, should there be visible indications that the valve or core was leaking.
I have rebuilt a valve before and it has held for a number of years, I am considering doing that again and reinstalling it, but I don't know for sure if that is the problem.
Any thoughts of suggestions as what to do next would be appreciated.
Thanks
