It is DEFINITELY the new style rotor pump as shown in the Bentley 16V book. I know this for a fact, because I'm the one who bought the replacement pump and brought it to the shop, and it definitely has the plastic lock ring that seals it into the tank. I didn't see the assembly while it was out of the car, but judging from those two very strong indications, it's definitely the "modern" assembly with the fluid-powered "ejection pump" and not the earlier electric secondary pump that fed the Bosch roller-type pump.
It is possible that something popped loose in the tank after 5 years of complete normality. It makes me nervous that I strongly suspect the fuel level sender has fallen apart. Latest on that is my fuel gauge and fuel warning light are going intermittently crazy, randomly flickering and the needle oscillating quickly from full to empty. At least when they were dead, I wasn't worried that something was banging around in the tank.
I may pick up the OEM pump removal tool kit from Autozone and have a peek at the sender and pump.
But first, I'm going to rewire all the ground wires at the radiator point and see if it dies again after that. I drove the car around locally today for about an hour, and... nothing. It ran fine the whole time.
