My '89 SPG has somewhere around 280k and continues to run very well.
The blocks are made from a steel that has a relatively high proportion of nickel, so they don't wear. This is the same sort of alloy that industrial pump manufacturers use for applications that pump abrasive slurries. JerseySaab mentioned that when he opened up his engine there wasn't any ridge ring. I've seen the same thing in other high mileage 2.0 L SAAB engines.
The bearings in these engines are good for at least 300k miles if the oil is changed regularly. After that you might want to look at changing the main, rod, and thrust bearings.
The important things for these cars are the degree of rust damage and the condition of the transmission.
The transmission in mine is original, and it exhibits the usual noises from bearing wear. It gets its transmission oil changed when the engine oil is changed.
