Other repairs while the lump is out 1 Saabers Like This Post! You will certainly get a host of suggestions on things to replace while you have the lump out of the car. Therefore, I am going to offer up a couple to get the ball rolling:
1) the upper A-Arm bushings and the motor mount on the driver's side. Both are nearly impossible with the engine in the car. The upper A-Arm bushings are too cheap not to do, and the motor mount on that side, even if it is still good, also fits the other side. It doesn't take a lot of wear and tear, but I replace it and save it to use when the one that takes all the abuse from the torque of the engine as well as the heat of the exhaust manifold (the passenger side) inevitably fails. Just put it on the shelf and wait. The passenger side is easy - the driver's side, not so much.
2) Among the most hated of all Saab 900 repairs is a swap of the steering rack assembly. Its uncomfortable on your back, the bolts are nearly impossible to reach (e.g. a good tip is to cut a wrench in half!), its a filthy dirty job that you need to throw your clothes away after wards, it is practically a jigsaw puzzle to figure out how to get it out of its tight quarters, and generally takes a first-timer all day to accomplish with much swearing and the need for many beers. It is the kind of job that when you finally wrangle it free, you crawl out from under the car and fling it across the yard, yelling I beat you you dirty SOB!! With the engine IN, that is.
With the engine out, it is nearly painless (an hour tops). Even a good rack last only about 80,000 to 100,000 miles (my experience). So unless you've got receipts from previous owner, I'd think strongly about doing this while you've got the chance. I usually spring for a new PS pump at the same time - they have similar longevity. If you need to be further convinced, search the archives under "replace rack" and/or "worst jobs" or "worst repairs." I kid you not.
