I would say that should have been some noises on sign of failure that would have been a warning, EXCEPT for an incident that happened in our shop two weeks ago. We had a customers car in for some repair work, nothing whatsoever relating to the transmission and I had driven the car after our repairs and there were no noises. This was on a Wednesday and on the Following Monday the customer called and then brought the car in with complaint of a noise in the transmission when going forward and it trying to lock up when in reverse. Transmission level was full, drained the lube and found traces of metal, removed the rear cover and found larger pieces that were obviously bearing parts. The pinion bearing was chewed up completely. The customer confirmed that ther was no sign of noise or problem for the first two days after we did our work and then it happened on the third day as he backed out of the garage. I've rebuilt my share of C900 transmissions and seen a lot of pinion bearing failure, but never before with absolutely no indication of a problem. Currently preparing a OG9-3 for him to be his next Saab since I sold him the C900 about 17 years ago.
