As Justin mentioned, the problem you encounter may be hydraulic related, only.
Common to this type of era SAAB, many shops have found the clutch master cylinder to have slight oxidation/pitting on this components internal bore. The pitting would allow for a bypassing of hydraulic fluid which could cause similar symptoms as you described. Many shops remove the clutch slave cylinder, hone its bore to remove the pitting, and install a new seal kit. Replacing the clutch master cylinder would be another option but beware of aftermarket replacements.
